Bad News Bears

So the Bad News Bears did post another undefeated season. Not that we keep score, but they were pretty impressive. Sunday was the last day of lacrosse and the community picnic. Noah’s team played better than the other team, and the other coaches were pretty competitive. They told me after the game that they had rolled every other team in the league until they played us. All of their kids seemed pretty upset afterwards.

Congratulations, Bad News Bears!

It was a rough game. Their team was physical, just banging on our kids arms and legs with their sticks, and cross-checking from behind. For the first time, Noah was intimidated. A kid cross checked him in the back while going for a ground ball. It was clearly a penalty, but Noah didn’t want the ball after the play. He let one of the other boys have the ball. When you’re little, it is not fun sometimes to get beat on. So, Noah had an assist in the game and a bunch of ground balls. As the referee, I took away his goal because our team didn’t have enough passes, but it was a pretty one.

I don't feel very good. It hurts when they cross check me in the back.

The boys had a fun season. And we did as coaches. I am glad that we are able to continually create an environment where they have fun, they are taught well, and they keep wanting more.

Noah back in action

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Noah has missed a few games with freak asthma attacks from severe allergies.  He was very upset every time he missed a game.  Dr Arshad told us that he should wait until Monday to resume physical activity, but it had been almost a week already.  And Noah was very upset.  So we let him play.

Man!

Man!

Ball!

Ball!

Noah likes to hit. Especially on ground balls. In the first half, he was fighting for a ground ball against 4 green players. He was the only one from his team. They were hacking at his legs. I heard a muted scream from Noah. And then he started tossing kids from the pile. He scooped up the ball and started running up field. Someone tripped him from behind and he lost the ball. I went over to pick him up and there were tears running down his face. He got up and saw the kid with the ball and bolted after him to lay a big hit on him. He was mad.

Pictured above, Noah is doing a classic Man – Ball with Michael. Of course, Noah took the man.

There were a few kids crying at halftime. 4 of our kids had been taken off of the field crying in the first half because the other team was beating on them. The boys were losing, and it looked like they would have their first loss. In the second half, Noah, Topher and Jack Geist took over. Noah scored 2 goals in the second half, Topher had one, and Jack had one. They won 5-3.

We don’t keep score as coaches, but the kids definitely do. And this group of kids likes to win.

I'm gonna set you up for a face dodge

It is fun to watch how much these kids progress on a week to week basis, and from year to year.

What's the name of the game? Groundballs!

Here’s your help, Noah!

He shoots, he scores!

Naturally, I took Noah to 7-11 after the game, and we ran into Topher and Jack, getting Slurpees

Noah’s first concert

Noah went to his first concert last night.  No idea where the concert was.  I think the band was called ‘Lone Bellow’.  I didn’t even know he was going to a concert.  We got a call at around 9:00 PM from the parents of his friend that they were headed out of the city from a concert.

It must have been cool because he got a beach ball from the concert.  He had fun.

Hillcrest highlights

3rd place - Science Fair

3rd place – Science Fair

Liz won 3rd place in the science fair at Hillcrest. It was a pretty cool project that Marcia and I also got into. She measured how much weight different glues could hold. The winner, Gorilla Glue, held 368 lbs!

Noah and Eden each received 100% scores on tests this week.

All around, it was an academic week in the Kennedy household.

Sandy is trying to keep us down

As I climb into bed, the blinking lights out front from BGE’s standby man, Larry’s generator humming, and planes flying overhead every 6 minutes, I pause to reflect on the day.

Actually, I should start the tale with yesterday.  Sandy dumped a ton of rain on us.  We stayed indoors all day.  By midday, our back yard and woods were swamps and pools.  I had to go outside once or twice to fix the gutters during the afternoon.  All in all, we were holding up well.

By the evening, small amounts of water started seeping in the basement.  Eden and I stayed ahead of it for a few hours with a wet vac.  By 9, it was clear that the ground was saturated and we started to lose the battle with mother nature.  The telling sign was when water began bubbling up from cracks in the floor as if from a natural spring.  Still we soldiered on.  At around 10, Eden was way in the back room when the power went out.  She wad a little freaked, but found me in the dark.  We all went upstairs and showered and went to bed.

I became a little nervous, so brought Noah and Maggie into bed with us to ride out the storm.  In the morning, Marcia cooked eggs and bacon on the gas stove.  We assessed the basement … totally flooded.

Rap, rap, rap on the door.  Ian and Kerry Rathmell stopped by.  Offered us freezer space.  Also pointed out why our power was out.

A few more neighbors came by, the Marions and Blair’s.  And then we were off to hunt for coffee.

After Starbucks met our craving, we started in on the basement.  I will not mention the trips to the hardware store or all the mishaps getting started.

But, by 1:30, we started pumping out the basement, pulling power from Larry’s generator.  Eden helped the whole time and Noah and Liz helped as well.  By 3:30, we had pumped 1136 gallons of water from the basement.  Then we swept the floor clean.

While in the backroom, we came across the Halloween decorations.  Got in the mood and decorated.  Then got dinner at Chick Fil A.

On the way home, we found out that Liz has a presentation due tomorrow.  No power or internet, we went to my office.  Didn’t get home til 11:40.  We were greeted home by the BGE standby guy and a lot of red caution tape.

It had been a long day.  And a challenging one.  The things we need to do tomorrow are not reasonable.  And the days to prepare for Disney World are slim.  But we’re weathering it.  And everyone is holding up just fine.  No ‘woah is me’  here.  Everyone pitching in as a family and not complaining.

For the most part, I can handle this.  The only thing wearing on me is the inability to take a hot shower.  Gross!

Monster Dash 2012

5k resultsResults pg. 2Winnersfun runNoah and Topher with their medalspre race

Monster Dash 2012, a set on Flickr.

Saturday morning was great for the Kennedys. Lot of accomplishments all around.

Marcia ran the 5k, the first she had ever run.  And the first distance run since before Jack was born.

Eden ran her first 5k. She did awesome! She finished 2nd among 8 year olds, and finished ahead of a ton of 9, 10 and 11 year olds.

Noah trucked on the fun run. He finished 2nd on the fun run. And man that boy was running.

Liz ran with her old man, and with two of her friends, Molly and Mackenzie. The display of sportsmanship and competition between the three of them was awesome. They finished within 2 seconds of each other, and won their age group. Most impressive was their time, 23:20.

And, of course, I was only 2 seconds behind them. It garnered me 3rd place among 30-39 year olds.

I’m so proud of the family for the way in which they compete.

Up and down

It was an up and down day for the Kennedy kids.  They hit some highs and lows.

Liz won the pumpkin run at school.  Eden came in 4th.  They each received a pumpkin as reward.

Liz, with runner-up, Justice

Noah, on the other hand, had a rough day.  He hit his head early in the day, probably a concussion.  The, in the pumpkin run, he fell in a pileup, hitting his head again, this time with a big bruise on his eye.  At dinner, he cried because of the awful day he had.

I felt bad for the boy.  But told him that tomorrow is a new day.  And it is.  We are running in the St Mark Monster Dash 5k this morning.  It will be Eden’s first 5k and Noah’s first 1 mile run.

I’m excited, but also a little nervous for Liz.  Lots of girls are in fact gunning for her.  Girl needs to catch a break.

O’s win wild card

First time the Orioles have been in the playoffs since before Marcia and I met.  They played the wild card game last night and Noah stayed up until midnight to watch the end.  I taught him the pitch count and he got into it.

They play the Yankees next.  Maybe we’ll get some baseball fans in the house before it’s all said and done
