Eden at Beach Lax

It was such an interesting weekend at Beach Lax this past weekend. Not sure where to begin. But, the best takeaway from the weekend was Eden’s play on the lacrosse fields. She finally got back what was taken from her this time last year, confidence. She played hard; she played tough; and as a 3rd grader playing against 5th graders, she hung in there and made a lot of really good plays, including the assist to the tying goal against the Tornados. Her team missed the playoffs because of a tie in a completely bogus game where 4 of our team’s goals were called back.

Also this weekend, one of the parents of the Redshirts threw a bonfire for the Redshirts. Or so I thought. Apparently, all of Catonsville decided to show up as well. Not sure if they were invited. But many of the Redshirts parents felt alienated. And I was pretty embarrassed. I appreciate very much the effort of the parents that planned the event. I wish someone had told me that half of Catonsville would also be there, because the Big Sister/Little Sister events that I had planned for the kids, and told the kids about, didn’t get to happen, because the party was essentially crashed. Bummer.

Also, two teams, made up of kids that I have coached (I coached over 90% of the kids on both teams), won Beach Lax. I am very happy for all of the girls that are able to enjoy this success. I really am. But I am also very sad that I was run out of town and my daughters were not allowed to enjoy this same success with kids from their neighborhood. Liz watched her friends play, and I know she found it very painful. It is also a bit disheartening that none of them even realize the effect that my father and I have had on those teams’ successes.

Hot on the heels

Eden is getting hot on the heels of her big sister.  At school, there is an upcoming race, called the ‘Race for Education’.  It is some fundraiser that they are requiring the kids to raise money for and participate.  They are told to run around the school field for 50 minutes.  That’s right, 50 minutes.  That is a long time for a 5th grader, let alone a 3rd grader or 1st grader.

Anyway, they have been training for the race.  For the last several days, they have been running a mile a day at school.  Eden has been coming in either 1st or 2nd girl in her grade and among the top 5 finishers (boy and girl) in the whole grade.  Pretty fantastic.  It sounds like Lydia Lesnevich is besting her on some of the runs, but that is okay, Lydia is in a track and field club at the high school, and has been doing very well in 5Ks, a good athlete and a good kid.

On Monday, Eden was very dejected after school.  On Monday, when they ran the 1 mile, Eden was the 1st girl in her grade to finish.  When some of the other girls finished, they made some snide remarks to Eden that she must have cheated and told people that Eden didn’t run all of her laps.  Same girls that have been little shits to Eden all year.  On a day when she should have been very proud of herself, she was put down and felt bad on the inside.

And so it goes in this town that we live in.  Bobby recently made a comment, that Eden will pass them all many times as they follow the long road to mediocrity.

Eden is ready to soar.  She needs some breaks in her favor.  Come on man.  Give her one.

3rd place – Science Fair

Liz won 3rd place in the science fair at Hillcrest. It was a pretty cool project that Marcia and I also got into. She measured how much weight different glues could hold. The winner, Gorilla Glue, held 368 lbs!

100%

Noah and Eden each received 100% scores on tests this week.

All around, it was an academic week in the Kennedy household.

Sandy is trying to keep us down

As I climb into bed, the blinking lights out front from BGE’s standby man, Larry’s generator humming, and planes flying overhead every 6 minutes, I pause to reflect on the day.

Actually, I should start the tale with yesterday.  Sandy dumped a ton of rain on us.  We stayed indoors all day.  By midday, our back yard and woods were swamps and pools.  I had to go outside once or twice to fix the gutters during the afternoon.  All in all, we were holding up well.

By the evening, small amounts of water started seeping in the basement.  Eden and I stayed ahead of it for a few hours with a wet vac.  By 9, it was clear that the ground was saturated and we started to lose the battle with mother nature.  The telling sign was when water began bubbling up from cracks in the floor as if from a natural spring.  Still we soldiered on.  At around 10, Eden was way in the back room when the power went out.  She wad a little freaked, but found me in the dark.  We all went upstairs and showered and went to bed.

I became a little nervous, so brought Noah and Maggie into bed with us to ride out the storm.  In the morning, Marcia cooked eggs and bacon on the gas stove.  We assessed the basement … totally flooded.

Rap, rap, rap on the door.  Ian and Kerry Rathmell stopped by.  Offered us freezer space.  Also pointed out why our power was out.

A few more neighbors came by, the Marions and Blair’s.  And then we were off to hunt for coffee.

After Starbucks met our craving, we started in on the basement.  I will not mention the trips to the hardware store or all the mishaps getting started.

But, by 1:30, we started pumping out the basement, pulling power from Larry’s generator.  Eden helped the whole time and Noah and Liz helped as well.  By 3:30, we had pumped 1136 gallons of water from the basement.  Then we swept the floor clean.

While in the backroom, we came across the Halloween decorations.  Got in the mood and decorated.  Then got dinner at Chick Fil A.

On the way home, we found out that Liz has a presentation due tomorrow.  No power or internet, we went to my office.  Didn’t get home til 11:40.  We were greeted home by the BGE standby guy and a lot of red caution tape.

It had been a long day.  And a challenging one.  The things we need to do tomorrow are not reasonable.  And the days to prepare for Disney World are slim.  But we’re weathering it.  And everyone is holding up just fine.  No ‘woah is me’  here.  Everyone pitching in as a family and not complaining.

For the most part, I can handle this.  The only thing wearing on me is the inability to take a hot shower.  Gross!

My First 5k

Two days ago, I ran my first 5k.  I finished in 30 minutes!  My sister got an award because she finished second in her age group.  I was the second eight year old!  It was really cool to  run with my mom and with my friends, Cecelia Pell and Josie Hahn.  I really wish I got a award like my dad and my sister.  Also, it would be really cool if I saw you run the turkey trot.  And that’s my first time running a 5k.

Monster Dash 2012

Monster Dash 2012, a set on Flickr.

Saturday morning was great for the Kennedys. Lot of accomplishments all around.

Marcia ran the 5k, the first she had ever run.  And the first distance run since before Jack was born.

Eden ran her first 5k. She did awesome! She finished 2nd among 8 year olds, and finished ahead of a ton of 9, 10 and 11 year olds.

Noah trucked on the fun run. He finished 2nd on the fun run. And man that boy was running.

Liz ran with her old man, and with two of her friends, Molly and Mackenzie. The display of sportsmanship and competition between the three of them was awesome. They finished within 2 seconds of each other, and won their age group. Most impressive was their time, 23:20.

And, of course, I was only 2 seconds behind them. It garnered me 3rd place among 30-39 year olds.

I’m so proud of the family for the way in which they compete.

Up and down

It was an up and down day for the Kennedy kids.  They hit some highs and lows.

Liz won the pumpkin run at school.  Eden came in 4th.  They each received a pumpkin as reward.

Noah, on the other hand, had a rough day.  He hit his head early in the day, probably a concussion.  The, in the pumpkin run, he fell in a pileup, hitting his head again, this time with a big bruise on his eye.  At dinner, he cried because of the awful day he had.

I felt bad for the boy.  But told him that tomorrow is a new day.  And it is.  We are running in the St Mark Monster Dash 5k this morning.  It will be Eden’s first 5k and Noah’s first 1 mile run.

I’m excited, but also a little nervous for Liz.  Lots of girls are in fact gunning for her.  Girl needs to catch a break.

Pacer

I stepped out of my car on Wednesday and heard an excited voice calling out, “Daddy, Daddy, guess what?  I got 54 laps today!”  I looked around and saw Eden’s face pressed against the screen in her bedroom window.  “I got the highest in my class.  And they announced my name on the announcements.”  Her face disappeared and she was out the front door in a flash to greet me with a hug.  Very proud of herself and smiling.

Liz also won her grade and got on the Wall of Fame; she put up the best score ever for her grade.  Eden didn’t make the wall because the winner the previous year for her grade got 69 laps.

We’re so proud of our girls.  They work hard and set goals for themselves.  They sometimes come up short.  But when they achieve them, watch out for the Kennedy girls!
