Senior Day for Liz

Today is Liz’s Senior Day. It is the last home game for Liz playing field hockey for St Pauls School for Girls. It also marks the last time Liz and Eden will play field hockey (or any sport) together. Although they are the oldest of our 6 kids, based on ages, sex, and sports played by our kids, this is likely the last time any of our kids will play on the same sports team from here on out. It is crazy that it has come this fast.

Recently, the girls were both featured together to promote a game. They have both been playing varsity sports since they were freshmen. And, Liz, as a senior, has been a standout performer this year.  And Eden has been a starter.

Their team has not performed as well as in years’ past, as it is not as deep with talent and with effort. But it has been a true joy and a pleasure as a parent to watch the two of them compete. And then see how they interact on the rides home. Liz is so supportive of her younger sister. And picks her up. And Eden looks up to Liz. And also helps her in ways in which she needs help.

I am not looking forward to the end of this road. The road has been long, but now on the last mile, I realize I was racing too much, rather than rolling down the windows and enjoying the cool breeze and the sun shining on my face. Good luck today, girls. And, Liz, thanks for the ride.

Liz demo with Lady Blue Knights

This past week, we were in Canada.  Liz was there as a chaperone and as a coach.  We played the top team in Canada, the Lady Blue Knights.  Our 2024s played their U15 Elite team, and held their own.

Afterwards, one of the coaches approached me and Liz.  He said he saw her throwing around and wanted her to demonstrate stickwork for his team.  Turns out he had watched her on Youtube before, as had some of his players.

Watching Noah play for FCA

Noah played this year for FCA.  He was their leading scorer.  They mostly played him at midfield because of his speed and scrappiness.  But occasionally he got to play attack.  Last weekend, in one game, his team won 6-4; in that game, Noah scored 4 goals and had two assists.  I rarely got to go to his games, so Marcia started filming them towards the end.  I returned though from Canada with Liz on Saturday, and got to see his last two games on Sunday for FCA this summer.

On Saturday, he scored three goals in two games, and had two assists in very little time.  In the first game on Sunday, he barely stepped on the field in the first half, but got a goal.  In the last game, they played him most of the game at attack, his natural position.  He scored one goal early in the game, and late in the game, the score was tied at 4.  At the end of regulation, it was still tied at 4, and so they went into overtime.  They won possession and called a timeout.  Below is the video from after the timeout.

Car wash with Jack

After a successful beach retreat with my lacrosse teams, my truck bed was filled with sand and so was the lacrosse equipment. After unpacking all the food and clothes, Jack and I went over to the car wash to finish the job.

We had fun together. I popped quarters in while he vacuumed the truck on the inside and then sprayed down the outside. Fun times.

Bake sale

Liz worked really hard for three days to prepare for the Bake Sale at SPSG on Pi Day. Maggie diligently helped her. They made mini cheesecakes and little pies. When Liz found out that the Math club was not sponsoring a table at the Bake Sale, she let us eat the pies and took the cheesecakes in to sell at the bake sale.

All of it was delicious. These girls are talented.

I have to share though. At around midnight, there was a mishap. Liz has finished the cheesecakes and went to put them in the fridge to cool over night. And she lost her balance. The entire tray got ruined. After three days of work! I was so impressed how Liz stayed composed. She cleaned off the icing and served the with whipped cream instead.

She did not win the bake sale this year, but she overcame certain disaster. And she made some delicious treats for her school and for us.

As a dad it was so fun to watch her and Maggie take this on together.

New lax beginnings

Luke played lacrosse for the first time on Saturday morning. It was pretty cold, in the 40s, at Catonsville High School. He had a great time though.

At age 8, we are starting him much later than his older siblings. Most of them started at 4 or 5. The rat race in youth sports in Baltimore is crazy though. And we decided to wait a little bit on Luke and Jack.

Last night, I took both of them to Play It Again Sports to buy equipment. Arm pads, gloves, shoulder pads and cleats, well over $300 purchase. It was so cool though watching them try on their equipment and run around the store in their cleats.

They both are asking if I can coach them. Hopefully someday soon I will. I have been fortunate to Coach all of the others.

Couch life

I have grown accustomed to sleeping on the couch since my dad got out of rehab. Marcia or me or both sleep on the couches on the first floor so we are able to get up in the middle of the night when my dad wakes and needs to go to the bathroom. Last night, Luke, Maggie and Jack all fell asleep on the couches with me.

Today, Liz leaves for Florida for lacrosse for spring break with her lacrosse team.

Liz on TV

Liz played lacrosse on Saturday in the PNC Invitational. It was hosted by Loyola University. The game was later broadcast on CWBaltimore. I watched the game live from a press box. And later watched it televised at home sitting with Liz’s grandfather. He has been too sick to get out and watch the kids play and watched the game from his wheelchair.

Liz had an assist in the game. She played well. Her team is ranked 17th in the country.

Visit with dad

Eden, Elizabeth and I visited dad on Tuesday after school.  They had a short day for the Thanksgiving break.  Dad was having a good day.  When we got there, he was in his wheelchair, so we wheeled him around the floor, and took him outside.  It was pretty cold, but he enjoyed getting out in the fresh air.  I don’t think anyone else ever takes him outside but me.  Eden was particularly great with her grandfather.  Both girls are pretty special, and love their grandfather.  Several times, he told them how beautiful they are.

It was a good visit.
